MRCOOL DIY Mini Split Install (Real-World Guide)

DIY MRCOOL Mini Split Install

If you’ve been thinking about installing your own mini split, the good news is this. MRCOOL DIY system is built for regular homeowners, not HVAC pros. No vacuum pump. No gauges. No stress.

Most installs can be knocked out in a few hours if you’ve got basic tools and a little patience.

Let’s walk through it the right way.

What Makes MRCOOL DIY Different?

Unlike traditional systems, MRCOOL DIY units come with pre-charged line sets. That means the refrigerant is already sealed inside. So you don’t need an HVAC license or specialized equipment.

That’s the game changer.

Step-by-Step Installation

1. Pick the Right Spot

Start inside.

You want your air handler:

  • At least 6 inches from the ceiling
  • About 5 inches from side walls
  • On a solid wall with easy access to the outside

Outside, your condenser should sit:

  • On a level pad or mounted on a wall bracket
  • In an area with good airflow (not boxed in)

2. Mount the Indoor Unit

MRCOOL gives you a template,  use it.

Line it up, find your studs, and mount the bracket securely. Make sure it’s level. If it’s off, you’ll deal with drainage issues later… and that’s not fun.

3. Drill the Wall Hole

This is the part people overthink.

Use a 3.5-inch hole saw and drill through the wall at a slight downward angle toward the outside. That angle matters. It helps condensation drain out instead of back into your house.

4. Run and Connect the Line Set

Carefully uncoil the pre-charged line set.

  • Don’t rush it
  • Don’t kink the copper
  • Route it cleanly through the wall

Connect it to the indoor unit first, then tighten it down (hand tight, then snug with wrenches, not gorilla tight). Make sure there are no threads showing.

5. Set the Condenser & Hook It Up

Place your outdoor unit where you planned.

Now:

  • Connect the line set to the condenser
  • Use an Allen wrench to fully open the valves

This step releases the refrigerant into the system and just like that, your unit is charged and ready.

6. Electrical Connections

  • Run the communication wire between indoor and outdoor units
  • Hook the condenser to electrical that has a dedicated breaker for power (usually 220V, but some units run on 110V)

If you’re not comfortable with electrical, this is the one step worth bringing in an electrician.

7. Seal Everything Up

Once everything is connected:

  • Insert the wall sleeve
  • Seal gaps with spray foam
  • Clean up the line set with covers if you want a professional look

Pro Tips (From People Who’ve Done It)

  • Use the template - it saves time and prevents mistakes
  • Take your time bending lines - one kink can ruin your day
  • Check for leaks - a little soapy water on fittings goes a long way
  • Plan your layout before drilling - seriously

Why DIY This Instead of Hiring It Out?

Simple - you can save thousands on installation.

MRCOOL designed this system specifically so homeowners can install it themselves without voiding the warranty. That’s almost unheard of in HVAC.

Final Thoughts

Installing a MRCOOL DIY mini split isn’t just doable- it’s one of the easiest ways to upgrade your home comfort without paying crazy labor costs.

Take your time, follow the steps, and you’ll end up with a clean, professional-looking install that works like a champ.

Sincerely - Your friendly and family owned most trusted  Authorized dealer MRCOOL DIRECT.
